Clothing and other info.
Your clothing selections and preparation for your portrait can make or break a beautiful image. To help aid you in selecting the proper clothing style, colors and patterns, below you will find some helpful guidelines that we have found work best for beautiful portraits. You will also find helpful suggestions on things you can do before you come that will ensure an enjoyable experience at my studio.
Newborns (1 to 3 weeks old is the best age)
•At least one hour before your session, please remove any socks or shoes that your baby may be wearing. Socks tend to leave lines around the ankles and removing them in plenty of time before your session will ensure soft silky skin.
•Please do not try to wake your baby up when you arrive at the studio. Sleeping is the best way to photograph babies at this age as their eyes are not yet focusing, they cannot hold their head up and it is something they tend to be REALLY good at!
•Clothing during the newborn session is not something I recommend for your baby. However, I often use mom or dad as a background to hold baby, so please have both parents wearing long sleeve black shirts. If you must have clothing on your baby, please limit the clothing selection to one outfit as you may upset baby by changing clothes to often.
•Feel free to feed or soothe your baby at any time during your session. You may wish to bring your baby’s blanket to swaddle him or her in should fussiness occur.
Older Babies
•Remember that babies will be most happy in comfortable clothes. Itchy, stiff, tight, hot, or restrictive clothing, and shoes, hats or head bands will only make your child uncomfortable and irritable. Babies should be dressed appropriately for the style of session you are seeking. For one of our more journalistic and fun settings you may choose a nice pair of jeans and solid color long sleeve shirt or a bright t-shirt. And of course bare bottoms are always fun.
•Solid colors ALWAYS work best. Patterns like stripes, plaid, paisley or polka dots tend to compete with baby’s faces. It is often hard to find clothing that is solid colored for a baby or child, but it is well worth it. Solid colored clothing will add a timeless quality to your baby’s portraits.
•When it comes to shoes you have several options. For the more relaxed and natural portrait, bare feet are the most adorable and natural way to go, especially for our outdoor sessions. For the more formal poses, however, you may wish to choose a comfortable dress shoe that best matches their outfit.
•Hats, scarves and other accessories can be a fun addition to any baby’s portrait session. Used sparingly, they can add that small feeling of playtime to any portrait.
