Fairy Photography - An Evolution of Fairy Day - Vancouver, WA

Fairy Day. One of my favorite days of the year. I started photographing fairies back in 2012. It’s so hard to believe that much time has gone by. Time truly does fly when you’re having fun.

In the beginning, I decided I would do my whole fairy set on a green screen. How hard could that be? Let me tell you that it was a challenge. I searched the internet far and wide to collect my digital props and digital fairyland backdrop. The only thing that wasn’t digital was the girls and their fairy costumes. I called out for a couple of models to make sure I could pull this off and guess what, I did. I was able to photograph my models and create a lovely fairyland for them. They were pleasantly surprised when they saw the finessed product.

August 18th, 2012 was my very first Fairy Day. I was so excited, but when the girls showed up they were less than enthusiastic. They walked into my studio expecting a fairy wonderland and all they got was a green backdrop with a green stool to sit on. I told them to use their imaginations, had them dress up in their fairy outfits and then the magic began.

I was able to finish all the fairy sessions then I got to work editing, and editing, and editing. Cutting out little girls in tulle skirts was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Everything came together in the end and the moms and little girls loved the images I created, but it was very time-consuming. I decided if I was going to do this again I needed to get a real set, not a digital one. So I went to work finding the perfect backdrop and props and ended up with this.

As time went on I added to my set and perfected my editing skills and now this is what my fairy portraits look like.

It has been so much fun doing these and working with these wonderful little girls. I am planning for this year's Fairy Day as I type this. The official date will be announced in my newsletter soon so subscribe if you haven’t yet and if you have, keep an eye out. I’ll give you a hint, it will be in June this year.
